Preservation Beyond Simulation: Pioneering Tech to Expound Essential History

Preservation Beyond Simulation: Pioneering Tech to Expound Essential History

The Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) is the nation’s leading museum of modern and contemporary Latin American art and culture. Founded in 1996 in Long Beach, California, MOLAA serves the greater Los Angeles area.

With more than 1,300 works of art in its permanent collection, MOLAA’s mission is to expand the knowledge and appreciation of modern and contemporary Latin American and Latino art through exhibitions, educational programs, cultural events, and more.

As time marches on, MOLAA’s mission continues to advance, now including new and innovative ways to preserve the art while elevating the museum’s ability to share Latin American art and culture with others across the globe.

Art preservation is critical for our shared human heritage. Through proper safeguarding, new generations are connected to the past, inspiring future individuals to experience a shared human history and cultural identity.

But, as technology evolves, innovation provides greater opportunities to be proactive. And MOLAA is committed to protecting pieces by utilizing emerging tech. Through a recent collaboration with Global Objects, MOLAA has taken a step into the future by illuminating the past.

Making them Accessible

Global Objects is a technology and spatial intelligence company that uses advanced 3D scanning, LiDAR, and digital twins to virtually preserve real-world environments, props, and historic artifacts. Partnered with Microsoft and Independent Studio Services (ISS), Global Objects is digitizing the world to help preserve our past while building our future.

Utilizing groundbreaking technology, Global Objects is currently scanning and capturing millions of objects to build the world’s first accessible and equitable database of 3D objects based on true physics and critical measurements.

Solimar Salas, Deputy Director at MOLAA is always looking for new ways to introduce more people to Latin American and Latino art. With Hispanic Heritage Month being celebrated from September 15-October 15, 2026, MOLAA and Salas continue to highlight Latin American and Latino culture 365 days a year.

“What we are looking forward to exploring with Global Objects is the freedom of flowing through the space we have with the digital gallery, but with the physicality of the exhibition we have installed,” Salas said. “Global Objects’ high definition and digitization of these artworks works to preserve that.”

During the collaboration, Global Objects provided tangible, realistic, and well-documented visual references of the art house at MOLAA. By capturing the objects and creating digital twins, MOLAA can archive and preserve the art, while sharing it with generations down the line.

“Preservation of the arts and culture is crucial for humanity. Think of all the objects, memories, or moments you’ve lost in life. Global Objects aims to capture the raw and inspirational nature of art by generating precise, 3D digital replicas of physical assets,” added Jess Loren, CEO of Global Objects.
